Detailed 8-Day Kenya Budget Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara – Your African Safari Begins
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, your Nairobi hotel or residence. After meeting your driver-guide, leave the city behind and head towards the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve.
En route, stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint to admire the vast escarpment and sweeping views across one of Africa’s most remarkable geological landscapes. Continue through Narok town and the surrounding Maasai countryside, where rural settlements and open grasslands offer a glimpse of everyday life in Kenya.
Arrive at your budget camp in time for lunch, followed by some time to settle in. In the afternoon, head into the reserve for your first game drive. Keep your camera ready as you search for zebras, giraffes, elephants, antelopes and, with luck, lions resting in the grass.
As the sun sets over the savannah, return to camp for dinner and a relaxing evening beneath the African sky.
Accommodation: Miti Mingi Eco Camp or similar budget camp
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Day 2: Full-Day Wildlife Adventure in the Masai Mara
Wake up to the sounds of the African bush and enjoy breakfast before setting out for a full day of wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara.
The Mara’s sweeping grasslands, scattered acacia trees and winding rivers provide an ideal habitat for an extraordinary variety of wildlife. Your experienced driver-guide will help you search for the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino — while looking out for cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, wildebeest and numerous antelope species.
Around midday, pause for a packed picnic lunch in a designated area before continuing your game drive. You may also visit areas near the Mara River, where hippos gather in the water and crocodiles can sometimes be seen along the banks.
Every game drive brings something different. You might find a pride of lions resting after a meal, watch elephants crossing the plains or encounter a herd of wildebeest moving across the grasslands.
Return to camp in the late afternoon for dinner and an overnight stay.
Accommodation: Miti Mingi Eco Camp/Lenchada Tourist Camp or similar budget camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Masai Mara – Another Day in the Wild
Today gives you more time to explore the Masai Mara without rushing from one destination to another. After breakfast, set off for another rewarding day of game drives, revisiting wildlife hotspots or exploring different sections of the reserve with your guide.
The Mara is famous for its predators, and you may encounter lions surveying their territory, cheetahs scanning the open plains or hyenas moving through the grass. Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and gazelles are also commonly seen.
Between July and October, depending on rainfall and herd movements, the reserve may welcome large numbers of wildebeest and zebras during the Great Migration. River crossings are unpredictable, so sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the Mara offers rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year.
Enjoy a picnic lunch during the day’s adventure, then continue exploring until late afternoon. As the light softens across the plains, return to camp with time to relax, share stories and enjoy dinner.
Optional experience: Visit a traditional Maasai village to learn about local customs and community life. This activity is available at an additional cost.
Accommodation: Miti Mingi Eco Camp/Lenchada Tourist Camp or similar budget camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru – Across the Great Rift Valley
After breakfast, bid farewell to the Masai Mara and begin your journey towards Lake Nakuru, travelling through the scenic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley.
If you did not visit a Maasai village the previous day, you may arrange an optional cultural visit before departure, subject to timing and availability. Continue towards Narok and across the Rift Valley, with opportunities to admire the changing scenery along the way.
Enjoy lunch en route before arriving in the Lake Nakuru area later in the day. The landscape gradually changes from open savannah to the green hills and lake country of the Rift Valley.
After checking in at your accommodation, take some time to relax after the journey. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a quiet evening or prepare for the following day’s wildlife adventure.
Accommodation: Buraha Zenoni/Hillcourt Resort & Spa or similar budget accommodation
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park to Lake Naivasha – Rhinos and Rift Valley Scenery
After breakfast, enter Lake Nakuru National Park for a morning game drive through one of Kenya’s most scenic wildlife sanctuaries.
The park is particularly well known for its black and white rhinos, making it an excellent place to look for these remarkable animals. You may also encounter buffalo, waterbuck, giraffes, zebras, baboons and other wildlife. Bird enthusiasts can look out for flamingos and many other species, although their numbers vary with lake conditions and season.
As you explore, enjoy the contrast between the lake’s shoreline, acacia woodlands, open grasslands and patches of euphorbia forest. If conditions and the route permit, you may also visit the Makalia Waterfall area.
After your game drive, leave Lake Nakuru and travel south to Lake Naivasha, another beautiful Rift Valley destination. On arrival, check in and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure.
Optional activities: A boat ride on Lake Naivasha or a guided nature walk on Crescent Island, subject to availability and local conditions.
Accommodation: Leisure Apex or similar budget accommodation
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate to Amboseli – From Gorges to Kilimanjaro Country
Enjoy breakfast before heading to Hell’s Gate National Park, a destination known for its towering cliffs, dramatic gorges, unusual rock formations and geothermal landscapes.
Explore the park on a guided walk or a game drive, depending on the activity selected and current park regulations. You may see zebras, giraffes, buffalo and gazelles grazing across the open terrain, while the rugged scenery provides excellent opportunities for photography.
After your morning adventure, continue towards Amboseli National Park, travelling south through Kenya’s changing landscapes. Stop for lunch along the way before proceeding towards your camp near Amboseli.
This is a long travel day, but the change in scenery makes the journey part of the adventure. As you approach the Amboseli region, the plains open up beneath the towering presence of Mount Kilimanjaro when the weather is clear.
Arrive at camp, settle in and enjoy dinner as you prepare for your wildlife experience in Amboseli.
Accommodation: Nyati Safari Camp/Manjaro Tented Camp or similar budget camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 7: Full-Day Safari in Amboseli National Park
Today is dedicated to exploring Amboseli National Park, one of Kenya’s most iconic wildlife destinations. After breakfast, head out for a game drive across open plains, dry lake beds and lush wetlands fed by underground water flowing from Mount Kilimanjaro.
Amboseli is particularly famous for its large elephant herds. Watch these gentle giants walk across the plains, feed near the swamps or gather around the water. You may also spot buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, hyenas and, with luck, lions or cheetahs.
The park’s wetlands attract an abundance of birdlife and provide a striking contrast to the dry surroundings. Your guide will help you explore different habitats and look for wildlife while sharing insights into animal behaviour and the Amboseli ecosystem.
Enjoy a picnic lunch during your game drive before continuing into the afternoon. If the skies are clear, Mount Kilimanjaro may reveal its snow-capped summit, creating a spectacular backdrop for elephant photography.
Return to camp in the late afternoon for dinner, relaxation and your final night in the African wilderness.
Accommodation: Nyati Safari Camp/Manjaro Tented Camp or similar budget camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 8: Amboseli to Nairobi – One Last Look at the Wild
Start your final safari morning with an early game drive in Amboseli. The cooler morning hours can be an excellent time to look for elephants and other wildlife as they begin their day. If the weather cooperates, you may also enjoy beautiful views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Return to camp for breakfast, pack your belongings and check out before beginning the journey back to Nairobi.
You can be dropped off at your Nairobi hotel, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for a suitably timed onward flight, or at Emali for onward road travel towards Mombasa. Airport transfers and onward connections should be coordinated in advance to allow enough travel time.
Your eight-day Kenya budget safari comes to an end, leaving you with memories of the Masai Mara’s wildlife-rich plains, the beauty of the Rift Valley lakes and Amboseli’s magnificent elephants beneath Africa’s highest mountain.
